Learn more below or in the link in bio: https://kin.educ.ubc.ca/events/event/seminar-christian-swann/ Abstract: Goal setting is one of the most commonly used strategies in physical activity and health promotion. For decades, research and practice has been based on the assumption that goals must be specific (eg to aim for 7000 steps per day) to be effective. However, in the last 10 years, there has been significant change in scientific understanding of how to set goals effectively – with evidence that specific goals can be detrimental for people who are insufficiently active, and that nonspecific goals (eg “see how many steps you can reach each day) may be more beneficial for the majority of the population. This presentation will provide an overview of key developments in goal setting in the last 10 years (catalysed by a major review led by UBC), reflect on current knowledge of how to set goals effectively, and hazard some guesses at where the goal setting paradigm might shift to in the next decade.
